Dear Friends of Liberty,
We at Anarchapulco are proud to stand in solidarity with LOLA (Ladies of Liberty Alliance) and the global movement demanding the release of María Oropeza, who was forcibly detained by the Maduro regime on August 6, 2024.
María, the leader of LOLA’s chapter in Portuguesa, was taken from her home without any judicial order — an act of oppression made against someone who has devoted years to advocating for a freer Venezuela.
María, a 30-year-old lawyer and activist, aligned herself with the opposition campaign of María Corina Machado. Her abduction is one of countless attacks on freedom of expression across the region. During her detention in El Helicoide — a facility known for human rights abuses — she was denied information for two months, and only recently permitted periodic visits.
LOLA responded swiftly:
- They petitioned the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which granted precautionary measures in María’s favor. Unfortunately, the regime ignored the deadline to respond.
- They coordinated fundraising and legal support efforts, working to supply María in prison (food, supplements) and to help her mother’s logistical needs back home.
- At the Atlas Network’s Liberty Forum & Freedom Dinner, LOLA won the John Blundell Elevator Pitch competition with a compelling 60-second presentation promoting María’s cause. The prize ($1,500) will help advance their fight. ladiesofliberty.org
WE are with them.
Why This Matters Now
This month’s NonConformist Series: Expressions of Freedom addresses the very issues María and LOLA represent:
- The abuse of state power to silence dissent
- The subjugation of free speech and political activism
- The role of classical liberal ideas in resisting authoritarianism
